Welcome to the Mid-life Minimalist blog! I’m Shoshanah, a single empty nester with two adult children, writing about minimalism and my journey to live more intentionally with less. I’ve been following the simplicity path for a long time but took a few detours during the hectic parenting years. A couple of years ago I began listening to podcasts and reading about minimalism, which revived my interest in living a simpler, more intentional life.
My first blog, After The Fire, was about my experience of going through a house fire in 2011 and the struggle to rebuild my home and life again. I didn’t lose everything, but what I did lose, I didn’t mourn (too much). I guess I had minimalist tendencies then, too, as I decided not to replace everything and soon moved into a much smaller house.
After ending that blog, I started another one about various topics, including my experience with cancer. Then I stopped. Life got too busy. Eventually, I got to thinking about my life, where I wanted to be, and what I wanted to do. It wasn’t exactly a mid-life crisis, but the seeds of a more meaningful, minimalist life were planted. I moved again, this time halfway across the country to Florida. I finally got back to writing and describing my journey towards a simpler, more meaningful life.
Why start my own minimalism blog when there are lots of other blogs out there on minimalism? Many of those blogs are directed more to younger people with no kids or people with younger kids. I don’t focus on young families. Mid-life minimalists (a term I define very loosely) have older kids getting ready to launch or already launched or perhaps no kids at all. We are re-evaluating our lives as we move through this mid-life stage. While minimalists of all ages share common ideas, those of us in mid-life often have a different perspective based on years of life experience. My path will differ from yours in some ways, so I hope we can share ideas with each other.
